Before arrival and documents
Approved ESTA, eligible e-passport with integrated chip. Passport valid through the intended stay under the FAM six-month exemption list. Air/sea initial VWP entry requires a participating carrier and qualifying onward/return ticket; an itinerary ending in Canada, Mexico or an adjacent island does not qualify unless resident there. Carry evidence of financial solvency and a home abroad. Land-entry travellers must establish eligibility to the officer; the provisional I-94 process carries a separate fee. Every traveller, including a child, needs the required passport and authorization.
Conditions and evidence
Prior presence in Cuba since 12 January 2021, or DPRK, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen since 1 March 2011, can remove VWP eligibility, subject to limited exceptions. Dual nationality of Cuba, DPRK, Iran, Iraq, Sudan or Syria also matters. British entry is limited to the qualifying British-citizen status. An ESTA is not guaranteed admission; a visa may be necessary instead.
